EPON was proposed by the EFM(Ethemet in the First Mile) research group established by the IEEE 802.3 Working Group in November 2000. It is an organic combination of cheap, efficient, mature Ethernet technology and PON network structure. EPON Ethernet is a carrier, using point-to-point structure and passive fiber transmission, with a downlink rate of 1Gbit/s, and an uplink data flow in a burst Ethernet packet. EPON can provide certain running maintenance and management(OAM) functions.
Because EPON inherits Ethernet technology, it has a huge advantage in cost. Compared with traditional Ethernet, EPON mainly adds two parts: the simulation sublayer under the Media Access Control(MAC) layer and the MPCP as part of the MAC layer. The simulation sublayer makes the following point-to-multi-point network look like a multi-point to point link on the upper layer of the protocol. This is achieved by adding a logical link identifier(LLID) at the beginning of each packet to replace the 2 bytes. The additional MPCP implements the control of the local device's access time slot to the remote device, providing conditions for EPON to provide a variety of services. By selecting a suitable media access control algorithm, EPON can transmit TDM and other time-sensitive services.
The earliest EPON was based on 100 Mbit/s fast Ethernet technology. Many of the products on the market called EPON are actually based on the PON technology of 100 Gigabit Ethernet and do not belong to the EPON standardized by IEEE 802.3.3 Ah. Therefore, in order to distinguish it from the original technologies and products, the PON technology based on Gigabit Ethernet defined by IEEE 802.3 all is also known as GEPON.
