SPF and SFF

There are some previous articles to introduce you what is SPF, here again a brief description, and tell you what is SFF.

What is SFP?

SFP is the abbreviation of SMALL FORM PLUGGABLE, which can be simply understood as an upgraded version of GBIC. SFP module is half the size of GBIC module and can be configured on the same panel more than twice the number of ports. The other functions of SFP module are basically the same as those of GBIC. Some switch manufacturers call SFP modules miniaturized GBIC (MINI-GBIC).

In the future, optical modules must support hot-plugging, that is, they can connect or disconnect with devices without power cut off. Because optical modules are hot-plugged, network managers can upgrade and expand the system without shutting down the network, which will not have any impact on online users. Hot pluggability also simplifies overall maintenance and enables end users to better manage their transceiver modules. At the same time, because of this heat exchange performance, the module enables network managers to plan the cost of receiving and receiving, the distance between links and all network topologies according to the requirements of network upgrade, without replacing all system boards. At present, there are GBIC and SPF to support this hot-swapping optical module. Because SFP and SFF are similar in size, they can be directly inserted into the circuit board, save space and time in packaging, and have a wide range of applications. Therefore, their future development is worth looking forward to, and may even threaten the market of SFF.

What is SFF?

SFF (Small Form Factor) small package optical module adopts advanced precision optical and circuit integration technology. Its size is only half of the ordinary duplex SC (1X9) optical transceiver module. It can double the number of optical ports in the same space, increase the density of line ports and reduce the system cost of each port. Because SFF small package module adopts KT-RJ interface similar to copper wire network, the size of which is the same as common copper wire interface of computer network, it is conducive to the transition of existing copper cable-based network equipment to higher-speed optical fiber network to meet the rapid growth of network bandwidth demand.
